The qualifications of childbirth educators and
the classes they teach vary widely. Programs by which educators receive
their training differ as well. Your satisfaction will be greatly increased
if you investigate your prospective classes before signing up. The following
guidelines will assist you in determining which class is best for you.
Qualifications
- What type of formal training has the instructor participated in?
- How long was the training?
- Is she certified by a nationally recognized organization?
- Does the instructor continually update her skills?
- How long has she been teaching?
- What additional work experience or credentials does she have?
Class Size
- The optimal size for a class is 10 couples or less.
- Small classes allow more time for questions, discussion, and individual
attention.
Focus
- What topics are covered in the class?
- If some particular aspect of childbirth is crucial to you, find
out if it will be discussed.
Format
- How is the information presented? (Lecture, group discussion,
activities, visual aids, movies.)
- Utilization of various methods will increase enjoyment and
learning of class material.
Location
- Classes are held in a variety of settings including hospitals,
clinics, doctors' offices, churches, day care centers, YMCA's,
and in the comfort of the instructor's own home.
Community Reputation
- What do previous class members have to say about their
instructor?
- How is the instructor received by obstetricians and midwives?
The birth of your baby is a very special event! We hope this
